Protect the Integrity of Clean Energy Initiative I-937
Washington’s Clean Energy Initiative, I-937, passed by voters in November 2006, requires the state's major utilities to gradually increase the amount of new renewable resources in their electricity supply to 15 percent by 2020. Electric utilities also must acquire all cost-effective energy efficiency in their service territories beginning in 2010.
In 2009, the state legislature considered revisions to I-937, but no changes were enacted. With the 2010 legislative session in full swing, we will once again be carefully tracking any legislative attempts to amend I-937. We will need your help to ensure the legislature does not make changes to I-937 that would stall clean energy and green job development in our state.
It is critical that legislators preserve voters' intent to increase the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency through I-937. Investing in energy efficiency and adding wind, solar and other renewable power will diversify our energy resources, help meet new electricity demand, and reduce our state's global warming pollution.
The Environmental Priorities Coalition is closely monitoring developments and stands ready to protect the integrity of I-937.
