Bill Banning BPA In Baby Bottles Passes Washington State Senate 36-9

Statement of Ivy Sager-Rosenthal, campaign director, Washington Toxics Coalition:

"Today's passage of the Safe Baby Bottle Act (SB 6248) by the Washington State Senate is a step in the right direction for eliminating bisphenol A in items children use everyday. However, we were hoping the Senate would include polycarbonate sports water bottles in the bill. Sports water bottles are used by children and pregnant women and can be a source of significant exposure to BPA. A 2009 Harvard study found that drinking out of a polycarbonate sports water bottle for one week could increase BPA levels by up to 69%.

The version of the bill that passed the House earlier this week (HB 1180) on a bipartisan vote of 95-1 is a stronger bill because it includes sports water bottles. We will continue to work with the bills' sponsors, Rep. Mary Lou Dickerson and Sen. Karen Keiser, to ensure the final bill is as strong as possible to protect Washington families from BPA."
