| The losses are staggering and tragic - from the 11 oil rig
workers who died in the initial explosion, to the fisherman on the Gulf
Coast facing the elimination of their livelihoods, and to the oil-soaked
birds and marine life whose lives and habitat are being destroyed. This stands as a resounding call to action for all of us, especially in a state like Washington where our waterways - from Puget Sound to the Spokane River - are so essential to our health, economy, and way of life. You CAN do something about this. Sign this letter to Big Oil and tell them to stop putting profits ahead of our future. We cannot let oil companies continue to stand in the way of a clean and healthy environment. The disaster in the Gulf, the way they are undermining our push for national climate legislation, and their opposition to Clean Water legislation here in Washington, show how oil companies are leaving a legacy of reckless destruction that will take generations to recover from. Big Oil cares about their profits - not the painful costs to our health, livelihoods, and homes. And it's up to us to say "No more!" Our coalition members are sending a message to Big Oil - and we'd like you to join us. We're telling them enough is enough - that Washington's, and our nation's, people, economy, and waters deserve better. Click here to add your name to the list of signatures. I know this isn't news to you. You stood with us through the 2010 State Legislative Session when big oil companies - from BP to Tesoro to Conoco Phillips - pulled out every play in the book to defeat our Working for Clean Water bill. This legislation would have provided funding to clean up polluted runoff and to prevent major oil spills from happening here. It seems like basic common sense - asking polluters to shoulder some of the clean up and pollution prevention costs. But big oil companies were reluctant to dip into their profits and waged an aggressive campaign to stop progress towards clean water. They flew in oil executives from Texas, funded a sophisticated and well-financed opposition campaign, bused in employees from hours away who were paid to lobby against the bill, and hired some of the most highly paid lobbyists. Meanwhile, the slow-motion oil spill in Washington's water continues - each day more petroleum-polluted runoff flows from our roads and parking lots right into Puget Sound. We're not going to give up. We will keep working until Washington's waters are safe from the toxic runoff that's poisoning them. We'll be in touch with you over the next several months with ways you can get involved and make your voice heard. You've been with us every step of the way, and I hope you'll continue to stand with us. Click here to sign on to this open letter to the CEOs of big oil companies and let them know that Washingtonians are on to them - and won't stop until our waters are safe. Our goal is to deliver this letter by the end of July. |
